As I cleaned the trench, I thought about hindrances in my life such as busyness, pride and fear that keep me from being close to Jesus. Am I the only one that feels this way? Do you also have hindrances in your life that keep you from being close to Jesus?
I thought of the life of Daniel and how amazing things happened in his life. He is a good example of a bible character that didn’t allow grass to grow in his trenches. Here is part of a story of his life in Daniel 6.
“It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred and twenty satraps, to be over the whole kingdom; and over these, three governors of whom Daniel was one, that the satraps might give account to them so that the king would suffer no loss.
Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm. So the governors and satraps sought to find some charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because he was faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him.
Then these men said, “We shall not find any charge against this Daniel unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God. So these governors and satraps thronged before the king and said thus to him. King Darius live forever! All the governors of the kingdom, the administrators and satraps, the counselors and advisors have consulted together to establish a royal statute and to make a firm decree, that whoever petitions any god or man for thirty days except you, O king, shall be cast in the den of lions. Now, Oh king, establish the decree and sign the writing, so that is cannot be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which does not Alter, therefore King Darius signed the written decree. Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.”
Hindrances did come up in his life but they did not hinder his closeness to God. God honored Daniel. Yes, he did get thrown in the lion’s Den. I encourage you to read in the rest of Daniel chapter 6 to find out what happens.
Do you realize, like me, that there are situations in our lives that keep us from being close to Jesus? And sometimes they are kind of hidden from view by others, and maybe we don’t even realize these problems.
Remember the trench and my little flood? The lawn mower didn’t cut the grasses in the trench like it cut the other grasses on the lawn, so they grew thick and sturdy and tough. A shovel is needed to dig down deep to remove them. Then oh, how the water will flow fast and freely.
Oh, Heavenly Father, help me recognize that hindrances in my life like business, pride and fear, hold back the Your Holy Spirit’s work of guiding, teaching me to do Your will, urging me to pray to You, and leading me to talk to others about Jesus.
I sincerely hope that this is your prayer too…and let’s all see how the Holy Spirit moves, or should I say…flows in and through our lives.
