Years have past and I can say I have still struggled with my inner critic when it comes to drawing. Finally, after certain ah-ha moments of discovering websites to help, like
5 Pencil Method.com and Kindle Direct Publishing and Createspace, I found inspiration and training that I could do at home to accomplish my goal.
5 Pencil Method helped me to be more realistic in my drawings, more precise. There are free tutorials and videos to watch. I've even bought a few tutorials on portrait drawing. It is hours of instruction integrating all of those free tutorials.
For the longest time I thought publishing was out of reach. I had no money. I couldn't invest what I did not have. And after seeing a friend spend her money to publish a book only to not have one book sold yet...I felt it was a dark hole and useless. I surely didn't want to invest only to be zapped of money with very little books sold.
Then I found Createspace and kindle direct publishing. These publishing platforms are free through Amazon. I've spent a lot of time reading their guides and it certainly was a learning curve. I've made a few mistakes and one thing I have learned is to take my time in my decision making. Since I'm my own publisher it is even more important to make those book making decisions slowly.
Yes I do make mistakes. The nice thing is I can re-upload my files.
Some other things I have learned:
You can sell through amazon kindle at either 35% royalty or 70% royalty. If it's 70% your book needs to be priced between 2.99 and 9.99.
You can do free promos if you are involved in Kindle Select.
Your files need to be formated correctly - especially the picture files because of the cost of kindle delivery. If you price your book at .99 and the delivery cost is 50 cents, then you won't be getting much for your book. The resolution needs to be set low like at 72 as opposed to 300.
Yet in Createspace the resolution for the pictures need to be at 3oo.
When confused, read the tutorials over again.
Many videos on youtube help further explain the questions I have. I just type in questions and several videos pop up to help.
My latest book "Horse Lover's Coloring Book #1 is now on amazon in kindle format and also paperback (createspace). It makes me happy to be able to finally create a book from start to finish.
I thank God for the opportunity.
